Battery systems are becoming a crucial component of expanding solar’s growth

While California continues exponential growth in solar energy with rooftop system installations more than doubling in the past two years, solar really isn’t reaching its full potential among small to medium-sized businesses. Two major drawbacks hindering commercial solar adoption are its intermittent production and an inability to meet the instantaneous needs for increased electricity that businesses often require.

The financial advantages and energy savings of electrical battery storage for businesses, government agencies and industrial operations will be examined during a free half-day workshop sponsored by the CSE on Thursday, Nov. 20.

The commercial use of on-site electrical storage is gaining widespread attention in California with the support of recent state legislation mandating its use and an increased availability of substantial rebates.

Legislative actions in California are shaping the potential of energy storage to serve a greater role in future, as the state continues the transition to procuring more renewable energy from solar photovoltaic systems, according to Rebecca Feuerlicht, project manager of CSE’s Self-Generation Incentive Program. She gave a presentation on energy storage at the Intersolar North America conference in San Francisco on July 8.

An innovative financing method is helping thousands of homeowners across San Diego County to lower their utility bills by installing solar panels, insulation and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Their home improvement projects became affordable by using a loan program called PACE, for property assessed clean energy.

Installing solar power at the Kensington Veterinary Hospital on Adams Avenue seemed like a great way to combine long-held environmental values with a need for increased electricity, according to co-owner Dr. Patricia Ungar. Now that solar panels are producing a third of the pet center’s energy and providing up to a 40 percent utility bill savings, she’s also feeling a great deal of financial satisfaction.

The U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative has selected CCSE to lead a $1.3 million project aimed at streamlining and standardizing solar energy installations for residential and small commercial uses throughout California.

In early October, CCSE joined in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 Solar Decathlon at Orange County Great Park in Irvine. The international event drew tens of thousands of visitors to view 19 college teams design, build and operate homes powered by the sun.

Storage Week 2018 is an international conference for the development and finance of energy storage projects

Jonathan Hart, a technology integration specialist with CSE’s Distributed Energy Resources team, will be joining some of the nation’s leading experts on advanced energy storage speaking on a panel at the 11th annual Storage Week. The conference focuses on the benefits utility customers and the power grid can derive from behind-the-meter energy storage systems.
