For more than a century, gasoline has been the fuel of choice in the auto industry, but it wasn’t always so—and it doesn’t have to continue that way thanks to modern electric vehicles.
Cars started off using relatively clean energy. Steam powered the first self-propelled road vehicles in the early 1800s, with electric carriages arriving around 1850. It wasn’t until about 1885 that the first true gas automobiles hit the road. As the age of automobiles took off in the early 1900s, electric cars outsold all other types.

Although some recent work by the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Consumer’s Union shows encouraging signs about electric vehicle (EV) awareness generally in California, roughly 75 percent of those surveyed did not know the state offers significant rebates for electric cars and 80 percent were unaware of the substantial federal tax credit.

As local governments commit to purchasing electric vehicles (EVs) for their fleets, the slow pace of procurement is emerging as a major source of delay, according to Michael Terreri, Fleet and Facility Services manager at the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE). CSE staff regularly encounter instances of public EV fleet procurement taking as long as a year because of difficulty determining charging infrastructure and equipment specifications.
Dealer payment is unique among statewide electric vehicle rebate programs
The first two years of electric vehicle (EV) rebates in Connecticut have helped boost EV sales in the state by nearly double since 2015. The rebates, combined with a unique incentive for dealerships, also are playing an important role in motivating dealerships to sell EVs, according to a dealer survey reported by the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE).
The nation’s top-rated electric vehicle (EV) fleets have been recognized by Fast Fleet, a new clean transportation awards program presented by CSE that acknowledges commercial and public fleet operators that reduce pollution emissions and curb fossil fuel use by achieving superior electric vehicle utilization.

Project to Award up to $15.5M for Electric Vehicle Chargers in Sacramento County
A rebate project to increase access to electric vehicle (EV) chargers throughout Sacramento County launched April 4, 2019, with up to $15.5 million in funds available for qualifying local businesses and nonprofit organizations.
