Chris and Susan Anderson's Spring Valley home was built in 1960 and designed by Chris's father, an architect. Although the cathedral ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows provide a lovely atmosphere, the structure had a drawback: uncontrollable temperature swings that reflected the East San Diego County seasons.

"During the summer, it would never cool down and the temperature was often over 100 degrees at night, making it very difficult to sleep," said Chris. "In winter, we had to wear extra socks and sweatshirts while watching TV."

The Andersons hired an Energy Upgrade California™ Home Upgrade participating contractor to diagnose what  improvements were needed to improve their comfort and lower their energy bills. The result was a comprehensive upgrade that included attic, wall and subfloor insulation; air sealing; dual pane windows; and a high efficiency electric heat pump to replace an old natural gas furnace. They also added solar panels, a tankless water heater and ENERGY STAR appliances.

"With the upgrades in place, we can truly enjoy our home," said Chris. "Our house is now livable," Susan added.

To share their experience with neighbors, the Andersons are opening their home for free, educational tours. Visitors can talk with the homeowners, the contractor who performed the energy improvements and home energy coaches from CSE.
